Pertuis

A twinning agreement was signed in Pertuis on 21st October 2006. Pertuis is in an idyllic part of France , being about 15 miles north of Aix-en-Provence , and has a hinterland of particularly attractive and relaxing villages, as featured in the Peter Mayle book "A Year in Provence".

Like Alton, Pertuis is a 'Historic market town' and every Friday the main square and several streets are completely taken over by several hundred stalls selling a full range of goods and produce. Separate farmers' markets are also regularly held.

Over the last 20 years, members from Alton have visited Pertuis many times and vice versa – hosted by members in their homes and many firm friendships have been cemented.  There was a brief hiatus thanks to the pandemic but a large contingent of the French visited Alton in 2024 to coincide with the Jane Austen Regency Week.  In 2025, twenty Altonians went to Pertuis for an action-packed four-day visit and had, as always, a thoroughly enjoyable time.  ATTA is now looking forward to hosting the French again in 2026, our 20th anniversary of twinning.

Walking groups in both towns are well established and have forged close links, with annual exchange visits.  We are planning to link local schools together again, to encourage young people to get to know each other’s language and customs.

Pertuis Tourist Office

Pertuis has a long history and in common with

many towns in the region, much of the centre

is very old. There is a 13th century bell tower

and remains of the town wall date to the 14th

century. The Office de Tourisme is in an old

chateau.
